While I am trying to keep abreast of this relatively new area on alternative health, I try to keep an eye out whenever the Budwig diet gets a mention. On this occasion it brought me across a UK website called a Healthier Life, via an article called “Plight for better funding for alternative Cancer Treatments“ an excellent article from a UK point of view.

What did make me laugh was the statement close to the end of the post

New research has shown that using mouthwash could increase risk of cancer by nine times! The simple facts about this article is: The ethanol in mouthwash is thought to allow cancer-causing substances to permeate the lining of the mouth.

Great. So, not only is conventional cancer treatment so extortionately expensive but now we are also being ‘fed’ cancer-causing substances. It just puts oral hygiene in a completely new category…

I have to admit I was really pleased to read the report at Consumerlab.com about Omega-3 and Fish Oil Supplements in that when it comes to Mercury levels, out of the 41 tested none contained detectable levels of Mercury (more than 100 ppb).

The reason apparently is as a result that mercury is actually found in the fish meat and not the oil, but combined with the manufacture and filtration process this takes out any contamination.

Still we do not have that problem with Flaxseed oil!

I came across this news release, which although is a little above my knowledge base, but what was interesting is that the scientific community are looking into the effects of Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids induce a marked reduction of apolipoprotein B48 when added to fluvastatin in patients with type 2 diabetes and mixed hyperlipidemia: a preliminary report.

Cardiovascular Diabetology 2009, 8:1doi:10.1186/1475-2840-8-1
Published: 8 January 2009
Abstract (provisional)

Backgorund: Mixed hyperlipidemia is common in patients with diabetes. Statins, the choice drugs, are effective at reducing lipoproteins that contain apolipoprotein B100, but they fail to exert good control over intestinal lipoproteins, which have an atherogenic potential. We describe the effect of prescription omega 3 fatty acids on the intestinal lipoproteins in patients with type 2 diabetes who were already receiving fluvastatin 80 mg per day.
Methods

Patients with type 2 diabetes and mixed hyperlipidemia were recruited. Fasting lipid profile was taken when patients were treated with diet, diet plus 80 mg of fluvastatin and diet plus fluvastatin 80 mg and 4 g of prescription omega 3 fatty acids. The intestinal lipoproteins were quantified by the fasting concentration of apolipoprotein B48 using a commercial ELISA.
Results

The addition of 4 g of prescription omega 3 was followed by significant reductions in the levels of triglycerides, VLDL triglycerides and the triglyceride/HDL cholesterol ratio, and an increase in HDL cholesterol (P<0.05). Fluvastatin induced a reduction of 26% in B100 (P<0.05) and 14% in B48 (NS). However, the addition of omega 3 fatty acids enhanced this reduction to 32% in B100 (NS) and up to 36% in B48 (P<0.05).
Conclusion

Our preliminary findings therefore suggest an additional benefit on postprandial atherogenic particles when omega 3 fatty acids are added to standard treatment with fluvastatin.

Health-conscious consumers who are tired of taking several large fish oil softgels every day now have a smaller, more powerful alternative to fish oil supplements in MegaRed(TM) Omega-3 Krill Oil from Schiff. MegaRed delivers essential omega-3 fatty acids combined with powerful antioxidants, and is three times better than fish oil for supporting heart health. One MegaRed softgel per day — which is about as small as a coffee bean — supports overall cardiovascular health, helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels and promotes joint health and flexibility. MegaRed is now available nationwide at retailers such as Costco, Walgreens, CVS and Sam’sClub.

“The benefits of MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil when compared to fish oil supplements, include superior nutritional support, strong antioxidant content and better smell and taste,” said Luke Bucci, Ph.D., Schiff vice president of research. “Individuals also love that they only have to take one, small
softgel per day as opposed to three large, difficult-to-swallow fish oil softgels that often smell fishy and leave an unpleasant aftertaste.”Bucci notes that consumers are responding well to several distinctive MegaRed advantages, including MegaRed’s:
High levels of key omega-3 fatty acids: Like fish oil, MegaRed provides eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), but MegaRed omega-3s are linked together in a different form with a double-chain phospholipid structure that mimics that of the fats in human cell walls. This structure makes it easy for the body to absorb MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil. It also contains astaxanthin, an extremely potent antioxidant the body uses to neutralize free radicals that can damage cells and tissues throughout the body.

Support of cardiovascular health: A human clinical study of 300mg NKO(TM) Krill Oil (1 MegaRed softgel) was compared with several studies on fish oil. NKO Krill Oil was found to be at least three times better than larger amounts of fish oil. Specifically, 300mg NKO Krill Oil (1 MegaRed softgel) was better than 3000mg of fish oil (three fish oil softgels) for supporting a key marker of cardiovascular health.
* Environmental sustainability: One of the Earth’s most abundant and renewable organisms, krill oil is harvested from krill, tiny shrimp-like ustaceans that inhabit the cold ocean areas of the world, primarily the Antarctic and North Pacific Oceans. Well below conservative international catch guidelines, less than 1 percent of the world’s 500 million tons of krill is harvested annually, which helps maintain a healthy, sustainable krill population. Bucci adds that MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil customers appreciate this, since the environmental impact of over fishing is a growing concern among those who previously relied on fish oil for omega-3 supplementation.
